“Baahar nikalne ke saare raaste band ho chuke hai.” – Romeo Akbar Walter

Story

Actor John Abraham is playing the role of Romeo who is a bank cashier recruited by the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) (India’s foreign intelligence agency). They happen to believe that he’s an expert at disguising himself as whoever he wants and so can operate as Akbar (the undercover agent of India in Pok – Pakistan occupied Kashmir) during the events that led to the 1971 Indo-Pak war. What do you think, can he pull it off?

Review

Do you know what happens after a spy has his cover blown? In these scenarios, what choice does he have and what choice will he make? Would survival lead him up to going rogue, being a double agent, or perhaps move on?

This Robby Grewal’s film has the potential of being an interesting human/psychological drama that understands the emotional upheaval and psyche of unsung heroes (spies) as it is apparently inspired by true events. But instead, it took the conventional route and overshadowed the human aspect of the story by merging the concepts of espionage and patriotism into the thriller.

Without succumbing to jingoism, the film ‘Raazi’ had rightly tapped into this territory. On the other hand, RAW cannot be considered jingoistic either, but that doesn’t distract from the fact that though well-intended, it’s a drab film that fails to hold your attention. What you can take away from this film is a monotonous costume drama lacking in tension and emotion.

With its share of dramatic twists, the script might have looked interesting on paper, however, it lacks storytelling, is flawed in execution, and has far-fetched writing. All of these factors make this film a tad hard to embrace. You will appreciate the no-nonsense narrative, but it will struggle to keep you engaged throughout.

John Abraham, Jackie Shroff (who plays the head of RAW), and Sikander Kher give decent performances. In this movie, John’s acting skills and Jackie’s sense of style will stand out as always.

If you plan to watch it, you need to suspend your disbelief as the climax is audacious.
