Renowned ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas has passed away at the age of 72 after battling a prolonged illness. His daughter, Nayaab Udhas, confirmed that he breathed his last on February 26, succumbing to pancreatic cancer treatment at Breach Candy Hospital around 11 am on Monday. The final rites are scheduled to be held on February 27 in Mumbai.

In a statement shared on her Instagram, Nayaab Udhas announced, “In loving memory of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas. With heavy hearts, we announce his demise on February 26, 2024, after a prolonged illness. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 27, from 3 to 5 pm at the Hindu Crematorium, Worli (Mumbai), opposite Four Seasons: Dr E Muses Rd. Worli. The Udhas Family.”

Born on May 17, 1951, in Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas was hailed as one of India’s most exceptional ghazal singers. He garnered widespread acclaim for his soul-stirring renditions, rising to prominence during the 1980s and 1990s and establishing himself as a beloved figure in Indian music. His mellifluous voice and emotive performances garnered him a devoted fan base both domestically and internationally.

Among his repertoire of timeless ghazals are classics like ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai’, ‘Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein’, ‘Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera’, and ‘Na Kajre Ki Dhar’. Over the years, he released numerous albums and collaborated with prominent figures in the Indian music scene.

Pankaj Udhas received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 2006, recognizing his significant contributions to the arts.
